VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are needed to run all meets for our swimmers. Most volunteer positions are for the first half or second half of the meet. Not all volunteer positions are required at away meets.

Volunteer Jobs

Set-Up (Home Meets Only): Arrive 1 hour before warm-ups begin

Clean-Up (Home Meets Only): Stay and help clean up after the meet ends

STARTER (Home Meets Only): The starter will have full control of the swimmers from the time they get behind the starting blocks for their race, until after the signal to start has been given. He/she places swimmers on the starting blocks, or if a Backstroke start, in the water, and explains to them:

  1. The distance to be covered
  2. The stroke to be used

HEAD JUDGE (Home and Away Meets): The Head Judge will stand at the corner of the pool with the opposing team’s Head Judge, near the starter, and observe the order of finish of each event and record his/her observation on a form provided for such use.

STROKE AND TURN OFFICIAL (Home and Away Meets): This position is best for those who have personal swim experience or have been in the swimming world for a few years. Stroke and Turn officials are required to attend at least one training session that is put on by the league.

Stroke & Turn Officials operate on both sides of the pool, walking abreast of the swimmers during all strokes. They ensure that the rules relating to the style of swimming designated for the event are being observed and that when turning or finishing the swimmer complies with the rules applicable to the stroke used. Stroke and Turn officials will report any violations on signed slips detailing the event, and lane number, the swimmer’s team and the offense.

RUNNER (Home Meets Only): The Runner picks up any DQ slips, and timer sheets, and may record the swimmers times on the event cards, and takes them to the scoring table.

TIMER (Home and Away Meets): Timers will time the races using either a plunger or stop watch. There are 2-3 timers per lane.

RIBBON WRITER (Home and Away Meets): The Ribbon Writers are responsible for affixing the appropriate swimmers information on the place ribbons for each event. The Ribbon Writer from each team affixes the labels to the ribbons for the swimmers from their team only

ANNOUNCER (Home Meets Only): The announcer is responsible for informing all the progress of the meet, and sharing important information throughout the meet. .

8 & UNDER COORDINATOR (Home and Away Meets): The 8 & Under coordinator gathers all 8 & Under swimmers prior to their races, and helps coaches ensure that they are at the blocks and ready for their race.

SCORING TABLE ASSISTANT: This job is assigned by either the computer operator or Team Rep.
